From the President

First and most important, I hope this newsletter finds each of you safe and in the best shape possible.  Our state took a big hit from the recent Hurricane Harvey.  I have heard about several of our members in the southeast Texas area that have suffered some damage and loss from the storm.  We wish each of you a speedy recovery and we pray that all will be better in the near future.

We hope you are all planning to come out to the 2018 Spring Roundup with the Texas Wood Carvers Guild.  We will be returning to Cleburne for the second time.  I think many were surprised by the facilities and event that was held there last year. We are looking forward to another great event.

Remember the dates:  The show will be Saturday and Sunday April 7-8, 2018, and our Carving Seminars will be held Monday-Friday April 9-13, 2018.  A detailed schedule of the entire week’s events can be found elsewhere in this website.

The show will be using a similar format as has been used in the recent past.  Please review all the show details in this newsletter.  Remember we have a new show chairman this year.  I know Robert Rangel will do us an outstanding job.  Get those carvings ready to compete and be judged.  Prize money will be awarded.  Clubs do not forget about the club carving completion—read about the details and get everyone involved.

As we did last year, for those that can only be with us on the weekend, we will have a limited amount of instruction seminars going on during the show.  See the Instructor page for more details.

On Sunday afternoon, the Texas State Whittling Competition will take place.  Novice, Intermediate and Open divisions will be up for grabs.  Sharpen those knives and be ready for this ever fun event.

As you register, don’t forget to buy those banquet tickets.  On Thursday we will have a great evening with the meal, awards, and auction items.  There will be a chance to win some raffle prizes during the week, also.

I know the real important stuff is the carving time.  I have been told by our VP-Alan that we have some new instructors on the list and that many of the favorites are going to be back with new projects.  Please sign up for classes, but read about the new policy about last minute changing of classes that was passed by the TWG Board in this newsletter.

You cannot love the TWG without loving its people.  But we need a few of those folks to step up and help us out.  Check out the article about nominations and open positions.

It is going to be a great Spring Roundup.  I hope you are making your reservations and plans now to be in attendance.  See you there.

From the Vice President

Greetings! I hope that this edition of the newsletter for the Texas Woodcarvers Guild finds all of you doing well.  Many folks in our country have been through many major ordeals this year and our hearts go out to them.

With the October 1st registration startup for the 2018 TWG event we are excited to have an excellent lineup of instructors.  The upcoming event dates are ss follows.  Friday April 6th is setup for the show, April 7th and 8th are the dates for show and mini classes, April 9th thru the 13th are the regular seminar dates.  As noted before we will once again be having mini seminars during the show. We are excited to have many excellent returning instructors as well as some very talented new instructors join us for the 2nd event to be held in Cleburne Texas.  Please make NOTE of the change in policy concerning seminar changes!  Please sign up early for the best opportunity to get the seminars of your choice.  Many of these seminars fill quickly.  Waiting lists will be available, but why take a chance?   Sign up early!  We are looking into having some non-carvers activities, most of which will be signed up for at the event.

The Texas Woodcarvers Guild will be looking to fill some positions at the upcoming event.  An organization is made up of many different people with lots of ideas and talents.  This will be an opportunity for you to step up and contribute to YOUR organization, bringing in your ideas and talents.  Please take this into deep consideration if asked or volunteer yourself.

Alan Heuston
Vice President
