David’s dragons have received first places in shows at Converse, IN (the annual competition for the Caricature Carvers of America), Springfield, II, Broken Arrow, OK, New Braunfels, TX (TWG) and Grapevine, Texas, just to name a few.  David is a member of the North Texas Woodcarver’s Guild, the DFW Scrollers, and the Dallas Area Woodturners.

PLUNKETT, GAIL                WRITERS GROUP
Gail Plunkett

At each session we’ll do some writing and experiment with different ways to support our continuing progress as writers.  This will be fun for anyone interested in writing who wants to build momentum to carry back home, regardless of experience (or lack thereof) or type of writing.  Questions? Contact me at gailplunkett55@gmail.com or 713-416-8232.

Most importantly, we’ll write.  We’ll temporarily forget everything we’ve been taught about writing.  Instead, we’ll practice writing in ways conducive to bypassing our inner editor and censor, that two-headed beast within that can turn honest, impactful writing into boring drivel before the ink even touches the page.  Once you escape its tyranny, the fun can begin as bold imagery, original thought, your unique viewpoint, and nothing but the truth as you see it all begin to fill the pages.  Later, you can tap back into your store of knowledge and even invite your editor along to help polish and perfect your work.  (Just keep a close eye on her or she’ll turn your roaring bonfire into a small ember, doomed to self-extinguish any minute.)
Other Areas We’ll Discuss and Experiment With:

  • What goes on at ongoing writers groups?  What’s in it for you and me if we join one or start a new one?  What are the pitfalls to steer clear of?
  • What is “close reading”, and what tricks of the trade can we learn from it while being nicely entertained?
  • There is an enormous body of writing about the art and craft of writing.  Collectively, it is a magnificent source of motivation, inspiration and confidence building.  We’ll contemplate a list of over 100 titles that you might want to get your hands on.
  • Have you ever heard of the Commonplace Book?  It was around centuries before the digital age and it is still preferred by some of us.  It is a way to keep up with what you’ve read in a way that helps you make connections between ideas, keeping your writing fresh and lively.
  • Tools required : spiral Notebook, preferably with a hard back, several smooth writing pens( my favorite is Pentel’s EnerGel) ( A draggy pen is as bad as a dull knife)
  • Optional: Laptop or other electronic device for writing, something you’ve written to be critiqued, One of your favorite books or other pieces of writing , any genre, must be high on the “goodreadometer” scale.
